FUEL FOR THOUGHT: Dr. Mamobo O. on Storytelling & Community

Belonging is built through the stories we share. That idea set the stage for our latest FUEL For Thought session, where Dr. Mamobo O. joined Director of Brand Experience Jonny Boyle to explore how storytelling shapes identity, connection and the communities we build inside our organisations.

Dr. Mamobo is a social psychologist, researcher and founder of Gorm. Her work focuses on social inclusion, intercultural understanding and the narratives that help people feel seen and represented. Her insights offered a thoughtful and inspiring look at how stories influence culture at every level.

The Power of Story to Shape Belonging

Dr. Mamobo spoke about storytelling as one of the most human tools we have for creating connection. Stories help us understand ourselves, bridge differences and recognise the experiences of others. When people feel their story has space, they feel a deeper sense of belonging.
She explored how organisations can use storytelling to build trust and psychological safety. When leaders invite people to share their experiences, it opens the door to empathy and understanding. This strengthens relationships and creates a culture where diversity of thought and background is valued.

Building Communities with Intention

The conversation also focused on how authentic communities are created. Dr. Mamobo highlighted that community is not something that forms by chance. It is built intentionally through listening, openness and a commitment to making space for different voices.
Representation, she explained, plays a key role in this. When people see themselves reflected in their workplace culture, it signals that their perspective matters. It also invites others to contribute their own stories, which enriches the collective narrative and strengthens belonging across the organisation.
Jonny and Dr. Mamobo discussed how leaders set the tone for community building. When leaders model vulnerability, demonstrate curiosity and communicate with transparency, they create an environment where people feel comfortable showing up fully.

Dr. Mamobo’s insights underscored the impact storytelling can have on culture, connection and community. When people feel their stories matter, they show up with confidence and purpose. This FUEL For Thought session leaves us energised for what is next as we continue exploring ideas that move people and shape workplaces. More inspiring voices are coming soon.
